Casalvolone Exercise

The European Master in Disaster Medicine is an international education for physicians who specialize in disaster medicine. An important part of this course is a live disaster exercise. Visuell Systemteknik coordinated data collection and supported debriefing and evaluation using CITE Explorer.

A bomb exploded during the installation speak at a newly opened school in the town of Casalvolone, Italy. A minister from the government was probably the target for the bombings. Chaos broke out as part of the first floor of the building collapsed. Approximately 100 young student where in the school during the ceremonies and several got seriously wounded.

This disaster was the starting point for the Casalvolone Exercise that took place on the night between May 13 and 14 in the town of Casalvolone outside Milan in Italy. The exercise engaged more than 300 people from several organizations such as paramedics, emergency medical teams, police, fire and rescue, Red Cross, civil defense and medical personal at receiving hospitals.

VSL recorded the activities throughout the exercise and supported the debriefing with the visualization of key events and facts from the exercise. CITE® Explorer was used to replay tactical radio sequences, to show pictures from the incident and from the response, and to present detailed data from the medical treatment of the victims.

The exercise served as an important part of the European Master of Disaster Medicine (EMDM). EMDM hosted 25 physicians and medical experts from more than 10 countries that acted in key positions during the exercise. The after-action review was conducted with commanders and team leaders during two hours on May 14.
