VSL and MSB visit Falck and E-Semble

During two days in December 2009 representatives from VSL and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) visited companies and training sites in the Netherlands. The theme of the visit was increased learning from exercises and systematic lessons-learned from rescue operations.

The first visit was to Falck's two training sites in Rotterdam — Falck RISC and Falck NUTEC. On these premises, Falck hosts some 32 000 training days per year. The training sites enable rescue training onboard ships, oil platforms, helicopters and airplanes, and in industries and in apartments and houses.

The second visit was to E-Semble in Delft. E-Semble showed how virtual reality (VR) environments have been used to reconstruct real incidents. In one case, E-Semble supported the National Accident Investigation Board in The Netherlands in reconstructing a fire in a church, where a wall fell down and killed three fire fighters. The VR representation of the accident has been used as a learning material for the Dutch fire services.

E-Semble also arranged a small exercise using the XVR system. In the exercise, MSB and VSL representatives had the opportunity to act both as training commanders and as trainees.
