Increased learning in nuclear operations

How can we stimulate knowledge transfer between colleagues? How do we facilitate new perspectives on established routines?

VSL has developed the method Structured Reflective Observation in which professionals study each other's work during exercises. The method includes a structure which helps the person acting as observer to focus on key aspects of the exercise.

The method is supported by a computer system – CITE Observer, for data collection, compilation and presentation of observer reports. The compiled reports are used as a basis for a structured discussion (after-action review) with the trainees and the observers after each exercise session.

In spring 2009, VSL and KSU will use Structured Reflective Observation in the training of the control room staff of two nuclear power plants. After each exercise the participants will estimate the complexity of the exercise scenario by answering a NASA-TLX questionnaire (NASA-Task Load Index).

Using Structured Reflective Observation we set forth to increase peer-to-peer knowledge transfer and learning in the nuclear industry.
